How to Wash a Windbreaker (and Keep a White Set White)

Orbit Set Arctic White white windbreaker set with red logo by Full Circle

Windbreaker shell fabric is light and tightly woven. Hot water, fabric softener and a hot dryer are what wear it out. Always read the care label inside your jacket first; these are the general rules for a shell windbreaker.

Before you wash

  • Zip it up and close any snaps so the zipper does not snag the fabric.
  • Empty the pockets and loosen the drawcords.
  • Turn it inside out to protect the outside and any printed logos.
  • Spot-treat stains with a little mild detergent and a soft brush.

Washing machine

  1. Cold water, gentle or delicate cycle.
  2. A small amount of mild liquid detergent.
  3. No fabric softener and no bleach. Softener coats the fabric and can leave it streaky.
  4. Wash with similar colors. Wash light sets on their own.

By hand

Fill a sink with cold water and a little mild detergent. Swish the jacket and pants for a few minutes, rinse in clean cold water until no suds are left, and press the water out. Do not wring or twist the fabric.

Drying

Hang it to air dry, or tumble on the lowest heat setting if the care label allows. Shell fabric dries fast. High heat can warp the fabric, damage logos and set creases. Do not iron directly on the fabric.

Keeping a white windbreaker set white

  • Wash white pieces alone, every time.
  • Treat marks as soon as you see them, before they set.
  • Use a detergent made for whites rather than bleach.
  • Dry it out of direct sun if the label says so.

Our Arctic White Orbit Set and the white Arctic White beanie keep looking sharp with this routine. For darker sets like Redline and Black Stone, cold water and inside-out washing keep the black deep and the logos bright.
